States with largest undergraduate enrollment drop Spring 2017 to Spring 2018

Nationwide, Spring 2018 undergraduate enrollments fell by more than 275,000 students compared with Spring 2017, National Student Clearinghouse says.

Undergraduate enrollments in U.S. higher education institutions in Spring 2018 fell by 1.8 percent compared with Spring 2017 numbers, the National Student Clearinghouse says.

The clearinghouse says 15.3 million undergraduates attended college in the United States in Spring 2018, a decline of more than 275,000 compared with Spring enrollment from the previous year.

New York state had the greatest drop in Spring enrollment. The numbers declined by 45,608—from 1,077,832 in 2017 to 1,032,224 in 2018. West Virginia had the largest percentage drop—6.01 percent.
