Statistics from the National Center for Homeless Education show that in 2010-11, U.S. school districts reported 1,065,794 students were classified as homeless. The center says 72 percent were "doubled up," (staying with another family after losing housing); 18 percent were staying shelters; 5 percent were staying in hotels or motels; and 5 percent were unsheltered.
