Homeless students attending public schools, 2011-12

Statistics from the National Center for Homeless Education show that in 2011-12, U.S. school districts reported 1,168,354 students were classified as homeless, up significantly from 1,065,794 students in 2010-2011. The center says 75 percent were "doubled up," (staying with another family after losing housing); 15 percent were staying shelters; 6 percent were staying in hotels or motels; and 4 percent were unsheltered.
