Over the past five years, student enrollment in charter public schools has grown by 62 percent, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools says.
In its 10th annual report on the nation's largest charter school communities, the alliance has calculated that in 2014-15, more than 2.9 million students are enrolled in charter schools in 43 states and Washington, D.C. That works out to more than 6 percent of the nation's public school students.
The numbers show that 14 districts have more than 30 percent of their students attending charter schools, compared with only one 10 years ago. Two districts--Orleans Parish and Detroit--had more than half their students in charters. in 2014-15.
