Transylvania University joins farm to campus program

Nov. 4, 2014
The initiative is designed to encourage universities to buy as much local food as possible and to sign contracts with multiple growers.

Transylvania University recently joined the Kentucky Agriculture Department's Farm to Campus Program. The initiative is designed to encourage universities to buy as much local food as possible and to sign contracts with multiple growers, according to State Agriculture Commissioner James Comer.

Joining the program shows the Lexington school's commitment to sustainability, according to Angela Poe, Transylvania’s sustainability director. Buying local food reduces the miles traveled between farms and consumers, supports the local economy and provides income for farmers, Poe said.

Transylvania joins eight other Kentucky colleges and universities that are participating in the Farm to Campus Program, including Asbury University, Campbellsville University, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College, the University of Louisville, Morehead State University, Murray State University and the University of Pikeville.
