Enrollment at Broward County (Fla.) public schools is up this year, but more of those students are choosing charter schools over traditional public schools. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the school district's 14-day enrollment tally is 262,000 students, up from 260,000 last year. Charters gained 4,300 students, and district-run schools saw a drop of 2,500. Seventeen new charter schools opened this year in the district, boosting the total to 98 charters countywide.
Earlier: The Palm Beach County (Fla.) school district's 11-day enrollment count shows district-run schools lost more than 1,000 students this year, while charters gained 4,171 students. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says part of the growth in charter enrollment can be attributed to the opening of 11 new schools, bringing the county's total to 50 charters. Overall, the district counted 180,000 public school students, up from last year's 176,000.
