Suspect arrested in death of retired Cal State Fullerton administrator

Aug. 22, 2019
Steven Shek Keung Chan, 57, the former director of budget and finance and student services at the university, was found stabbed to death in a car in a university parking lot.

A suspect has been arrested in the stabbing death earilier this week of a former administrator on the campus of California State University Fullerton.

NBC News reports that Chuyen Vo, 51, of Huntington Beach, Calif., was taken into custody Wednesday night and booked in connection with the alleged murder of Steven Shek Keung Chan.

Chan, 57, the former director of budget and finance and student services at Cal State Fullerton, was found Monday in a car in a university parking lot. He was bloodied and had stab wounds all over his body; emergency responders tried to revive him, but he died on the scene.

Police declined to reveal a possible motive, of if there was a workplace dispute between the men.

"Vo acted alone during the planing and commission of this murder," Fullerton Police Chief Robert Dunn said. "We now know Vo and Chan were co-workers here at Cal State Fullerton. And beyond that, beyond them being co-workers, we cannot comment specially on their work relationship."

Chan retired in 2017, but had returned to Cal State Fullerton after being rehired as a consultant, police said.

Investigators say a backpack belonging to the attacker was found under the victim's vehicle that contained an incendiary device,  like one used to ignite a fire, and items usually associated with a kidnapping—zip ties, wigs and other disguises.

"It is with such a heavy heart and a deep and profound sense of sadness that I inform you that our colleague and friend, Steven Chan, a beloved and long-serving member of the Titan Family, passed away this morning after a tragic and senseless attack in the parking lot behind College Park," CSUF President Fram Virjee said in a letter.

The Cal State Fullerton campus is about 35 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
