Gunman charged with attempted murder in shooting of a special education assistant at Frederick Douglass High School.

A staff member at a Baltimore high school was shot and seriously wounded Friday afternoon in the school's lobby.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Michael Marks, 56, a special education assistant at Frederick Douglass High School, was seriously injured and is being treated at a local hospital.

The alleged shooter, Neil Davis, 25, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and firearm violations. Police say Davis is a family member of a Douglass student.

No students were injured in the incident.

Classes at Douglass were canceled Monday "to allow time to plan counseling and support," the district says.

After entering the school through its front entrance on Friday afternoon, the man was confronted by Marks. The man then shot Marks in the lower torso, police say.

Marks “has served Baltimore’s students for many years, and I ask you all as part of our City Schools community to hold him and his family in your hearts,” district CEO Sonja Santelises said in a message to families.

School police responded and took the man into custody without incident.

District spokeswoman Edie House-Foster says no officer pulled out his firearm during the encounter.

Santelises pledged a review of safety and security protocols at Douglass and all schools.

“My highest priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff members,” she says, “and I and my leadership team will take all possible steps to ensure that our schools are the safe havens they need to be.”
