8th grade student dies by suicide at Arkansas high school

The 14-year-old boy was found fatally shot in a bathroom at Concord High School in Concord, Ark.

A 14-year-old student shot himself to death Wednesday afternoon in a bathroom at a rural Arkansas high school,.

Arkansasonline.com reports that the shooting occurred in the bathroom of the cafeteria at Concord High School in Concord, Ark.

Cleburne County Sheriff Chris Brown and Concord Police Chief Willie Baker said in a joint statement that officers responded around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday after a school employee heard a gunshot.

When he went to investigate, he found a student in the bathroom with what appeared to be a gunshot wound in the head.

Authorities says the student was a 14-year-old boy in eighth grade. His identity has not been disclosed.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the school and the school remained locked down while officers searched students’ belongings and lockers before sending them home for the day.

School officials canceled classes for the remainder of the week and will have grief counselors available when students and teachers return on Monday.

The 459-student Concord district has  a K-6 elementary school and a high school campus for grades seven to 12.

Concord is a little less than 100 miles northeast of Little Rock.

The shooting comes less than a month after a 14-year-old student brought a handgun into a Prescott, Ark., high school and shot another student, according to officials there.
