Georgia district completes construction of 255,000-square-foot middle school

July 25, 2016
Cherokee County district will open the new Dean Rusk Middle School next week to more than 1,450 students.

The Cherokee County (Ga.) School District has completed construction of a new $36.8 million Dean Rusk Middle School, which will welcome more than 1,450 students when classes begin next week.

The 255,037-square-foot building, using a modified version of the district's prototype middle school design, has been constructed on a 25.6-acre campus in Canton, Ga., and will replace the existing Dean Rusk Middle.

The two-story facility, has a capacity of 1,600 students, 400 more than the former campus.

The school has been equipped with several technological innovations, such as a video-conferencing classroom, a 3D printer, a green-screen video room and a Lego robotics table.

Energy-saving elements include tankless water heaters, electric hand dryers and T-5 fluorescent light fixtures, all greatly reducing energy costs.

The architect is KRH Architects, and the builder is Womack, Lewis & Smith.

The school is named for Dean Rusk, a Cherokee County native who was U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

The former Dean Rusk building is being renovated and will provide additional space for Sequoyah High School.
