Trustees at Ohio University authorize construction of $65 million medical school facility

Jan. 23, 2019
Construction of the three-story facility on Athens campus is scheduled to begin later this year.

The Board of Trustees at Ohio University has authorized the university to move forward on a $65 million project to build a new medical school building in Athens.

The Athens News reports that the three-story classroom building for the OU Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine will be built on vacant green space on West Union Street.

Money for the project is coming from several sources—$5 million from the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, $6 million in external funding from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation, and $54 million from the university’s “internal bank” (which is essentially a loan).

The design of the project is expected to be completed soon, and construction should begin sometime later this year. The construction is set for completion in 2021.
