Architects' group honors buildings in Boston and Washington, D.C.

The expansion and renovation of the Sidwell Friends Middle School in Washington, D.C., has been named by the American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment as one of the top 10 green projects for 2007. The sustainable features of the completed facility include passive solar design, daylighting, and high-efficiency lighting controlled by sensors. A green roof and a constructed wetland reduce stormwater runoff. The architect is KieranTimberlake Associates.

Another project cited in the AIA's top 10 green projects is the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter in Boston. The organization offers after-school and weekend apprentice programs in the arts for teen-aged students, primarily from low-income Boston neighborhoods. Concentrated windows on the south side of the building provide for the deep penetration of sunlight in the winter. Large floor-to-floor heights, 12 and 18 feet, allow daylight to penetrate deep into the building. It is the first Platinum LEED-certified facility in Boston. The architect is Arrowstreet.
