Roof collapse at Waterloo, Iowa, elementary displaces 400 students

Feb. 22, 2019
The Lowell Elementary campus will be closed until August after heavy snow causes part of the school's roof to give way.

An elementary campus in Waterloo, Iowa, has to relocate for the rest of the school year after the roof of the building partially collapsed under the weight of a heavy snowfall.

The Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports that repairs to Lowell Elementary School will take several months to complete, so the campus will not reopen until the 2019-20 school year.

About 400 displaced students and staff will be housed in vacant Area Education Agency facilities in Cedar Falls for the rest of the school year. Classes for Lowell students are canceled until Tuesday so that the temporary site can be readied.

The roof collapsed earlier this week in a classroom. No one was injured; no students or teachers were present because school a snowstorm had forced classes to be canceled.

“Obviously this unexpected damage to Lowell is not ideal, but we appreciate Central Rivers AEA offering the unused space at their former facility to accommodate our students and staff through the end of this school year,” says Waterloo School Superintendent Jane Lindaman. “Keeping the students and staff together to continue their curriculum and instruction in one alternate site was our hope, and this location serves our needs well.”
