Tommaso Cerase, 9, was fatally struck on the head by the post.

A 9-year-old boy died Sunday after a soccer goal post collapsed at a New York City high school and fatally struck him on the head.

CBS New York reports that Tommaso Cerase was practicing with his youth soccer team on an indoor soccer field at Park West High School in Manhattan when the goal collapsed.

Emergency workers who responded found the boy unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

An investigation is underway to figure out how the goal post collapsed.

New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said in a statement, "“This tragic incident is heartbreaking and our thoughts are with this student’s family and school community during this devastating time."
