Dominick Bess was a freshman at Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx.

A 14-year-old boy died Tuesday morning during football practice at a Catholic school in the Bronx.

WABC-TV reports that the freshman football player, identified as Dominick Bess, 14, was running sprints during practice at Mount Saint Michael Academy when he collapsed.

A certified athletic trainer tried to revive him, and emergency personnel rushed him to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The students were practicing in shorts and T-shirts at the time, and were not wearing pads.

A spokeswoman for Mount Saint Michael Academy issued a statement, saying it is bringing in grief counselors to help students cope with the tragedy.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, as well as coaches, the team and our student-athletes," the spokeswoman said.

More than 800 boys and young men in grades six to 12 attend Mount Saint Michael, according to its web site.
