The teachers union contract in the Minneapolis calls for white teachers to be laid off before any teachers of color.

The contract is a result of an agreement between the union and the district after a two-week teacher strike, reports WCIV-TV

Beginning in spring 2023, teachers will be subject to job layoffs or relocations in order of seniority. However, in the case that a teacher is “a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the district,” the district may lay off employees “outside of seniority order.” The district may use the same reasoning to bring back teachers who have been laid off.

The agreement states that council and staff "will focus on reducing inequitable practices and behaviors in our learning places and spaces as well as supporting educators, specifically educators of color, in navigating and disrupting our district as a predominantly white institution."
