Two former school board members in the Donna (Texas) district have been sentenced to prison terms for soliciting and taking bribes in connection with a services contract.
The U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of Texas says in a news release that Eloy Infante, 54, received a 46-month sentence and Elpidio Yanez Jr., 45, received a 37-month term. Both were board member in 2015, when the bribery occurred.
In addition, Adrian Guerrero, 50, a private citizen and a middleman in the scheme, was sentenced to serve 18 months in prison.
The three pleaded guilty in January to attempted interference with commerce by extortion. Prosecutors say that between February and May 2015, the three told an individual whose company provided services to the Donna district that in order for his company to keep its services contract, he needed to pay Infante and Yanez $10,000 each,
Both Infante and Yanez admitted they accepted partial payment of the bribes, and Guerrero admitted that he served as the middleman for one of the payments.
