Montgomery County, Md., will install cameras on the exterior of some school buses

Officials hope to deter drivers who fail to stop as required for school buses

From The Washington Post: The Montgomery County (Md.) Council has approved a bill to authorize the installation of traffic cameras on the outside of school buses. In a one-day survey last year, drivers in Maryland reported that about 7,000 people ignored the red stop sign and flashing lights on a school bus and kept driving. That number included 1,645 violations in Montgomery County. Officials hope to outfit the first two dozen school buses with the cameras, which cost between $5,000 and $8,000 each, by next school year.
