Kansas district will repair elementary with severe HVAC problems

Shawnee Mission district had been considering whether to close John Diemer Elementary in Overland Park

From The Kansas City Star: John Diemer Elementary School in Overland Park, Kan., will remain open and will get a new heating and cooling system. The Shawnee Mission School District announced the decision after officials listened to more than hour of public comment opposed to closing the school. Replacing the crumbling pipes at Diemer is expected to cost between $200,000 and $350,000, and administrators were considering closing the campus rather than paying for the repairs. District operation and maintenance personnel discovered the problem late last week, and have no money budgeted to fix it. Administrators must decide whether to find the $200,000 or so needed for the repairs or move students from Diemer into Trailwood Elementary for the 2011-12 year.
