The suburban Detroit district wants to deter non-residents from enrolling fraudulently

From The Detroit News: The Grosse Pointe (Mich.) School Board has voted to impose a penalty tuition beginning this school year of up to $13,038 on parents who are found to be skirting residency requirements. The fine amount is meant to deter non-resident families from trying to circumvent the district's strict residency policy. The action comes about a month after a group calling itself "Residents for Residency" urged the board to enact stricter enrollment rules. The Grosse Pointe district is among 11 districts in the Detroit area that do not accept non-residents under the state's Schools for Choice program.

JULY 2011....from The Detroit Free Press: Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's proposal to make every public school district in the state accept out-of-district students when space allows isn't sitting well with many residents in the Grosse Pointe Public School System. The district, which covers the five Grosse Pointes and part of Harper Woods, ranks above the state average in academic achievement and has opted not to be a school of choice. The district also is one in which residents have approved a special millage to increase spending.
