Enrollment drop could mean more closings in Indianapolis

District has 1,200 fewer students than last year

Indianapolis Public Schools could face more school closings after enrollment dropped by about 1,200 students again this year. Officials tallied 34,086 students during last week's official head count. The district shuttered six schools over the summer after a decrease last year. Now Superintendent Eugene White says the further decline could mean about four schools -- all elementaries -- would close. The district hit its peak enrollment in 1967 at 108,703 students, then decreased steadily as families left for township schools and a federal court ordered the district to desegregate.
