Broward County (Fla.) district says large budget cuts are needed

To avoid layoffs, millions in spending will have to be slashed
FromThe Miami Herald: Budget directors in the Broward County (Fla.) district say they will have to cut $47 million from the construction, maintenance and technology budget -- or lay off about 475 people from those departments. The school system's reserves may fall to dangerously low levels, after Broward taps into those funds once again to make ends meet. And more than $62.8 million will likely need to be slashed from the pot that funds teacher salaries, school activities, supplies and the district's central administration, or more teacher and staff layoffs could be on the way.
