Manassas district plans to rebuild elementary

The Manassas (Va.) school district is planning to rebuild Baldwin Elementary School. The design of the replacement facility has not been finalized, but officials are looking at incorporating environmentally friendly features. The existing 70,000-square-foot campus is aging; classrooms are cramped, the roof occasionally leaks, and a strip of duct tape holds some floorboards together in the auditorium. The new building will be made to house 600, compared with the 450 who now attend Baldwin. Officials say they want construction to begin next spring and the school to open by fall 2010. The architect is VMDO.
