Girl, 16, stabbed at Florida bus stop in fight with high school classmate

Sept. 20, 2018
Victim, a student at Gibbs High in St. Petersburg, is in stable condition; alleged assailant, a 15-year-old girl is in custody.

A 16-year-old girl was stabbed by a fellow high school student during a fight at a school bus stop in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the victim, a student at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, suffered a wound in her back and was in stable condition at a local hospital.

The alleged assailant—a 15-year-old girl who also attends Gibbs—was in custody.

Police say the girls have had an ongoing disagreement and began fighting at a bus stop. As the bus approached, the fight escalated and one girl stabbed the other before running onto the bus.

Between 25 and 30 students were on the bus, police say. They were subsequently transported to Gibbs High following the incident.

In a phone call to parents of students on the bus, Gibbs principal Reuben Hepburn recounted what happened.

"This is a sad and disappointing situation for me as principal," Hepburn said. "This incident does not represent the excellent student body we have and the caring environment we strive for at Gibbs High School."
