Executive Suite: Leaders of the Largest Districts

These are the administrators who have the responsibility to oversee the nation's 10 largest public school systems.

Leading a large public school system isn't a job that promises longevity.

Of the administrators leading the nation's 10 largest school districts in 2019, five assumed their positions in 2018 and a sixth in December 2017.

Only one of 10 largest districts has a superintendent who has been in the job more than a decade—Miami-Dade County superintendent Albert Carvalho, who was appointed to the position in 2008.

The responsibilities are demanding. Together, those 10 largest districts are responsible for 3.9 million students

Here are the administrators in charge of those districts.
