Florida State University to get new retail and residential complex

May 20, 2014
The six-story complex will be located on a 2.5-acre site that formerly housed FSU fraternity houses and some old homes that had been converted into student apartments.

Construction has begun on The Onyx, a new residential-retail complex on West College Avenue, a corridor that connects downtown Tallahassee and Florida State University.

The six-story complex will be located on a 2.5-acre site that formerly housed FSU fraternity houses and some old homes that had been converted into student apartments. The new complex will include ground floor retail space on College Avenue, five floors of student apartments, and a garage with more than 300 parking spaces.

The development brings to fruition a long held desire of city and university officials to revitalize the corridor and make it more attractive to visitors.

The complex will contain 219 residential units with 583 bedrooms that will be rented individually. It will also feature a deck and pool, as well as a fitness center and study rooms.

CA Ventures, a Chicago-based investment, development and management company is building the complex.
