Private fundraising for public schools widens resources gap, professor says

Co-director of the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford University says school foundations should work to shrink the gap between rich and poor

A professor at Stanford University writes in The New York Times that private giving to public schools is widening the gap between rich and poor and exacerbating inequalities in education. "Federal and state governments are in effect subsidizing the charitable activity of parents who donate to their child’s school," says Rob Reich, who is co-director of the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford. "...Tax policy makes federal and state governments complicit in the deepening of existing inequalities that they are ostensibly responsible for diminishing..."
