Gordon Gee has come under fire for remarks that offended Catholics, other universities and a rival athletic conference.

Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee says he will retire on July 1, following a series of verbal gaffes that he said were meant as harmless jokes but ended up embarrassing the university. The Columbus Dispatch says Gee's decision comes after a week of apologizing to people he offended with jokes about Catholics, other universities and a rival athletic conference. Gee, 69, has served as Ohio State’s president for two terms, from 1990 to 1997 and since 2007.
