Memphis-Shelby County board votes to outsource custodial services, but hasn't chosen a contractor

The unified Memphis and Shelby County (Tenn.) school board has approved the outsourcing of custodial services, but has not chosen a company to carry out the work. The Memphis Commercial Appeal says outsourcing custodial services is one of the more controversial recommendations made by the Transition Planning Commission as the city and county school systems are being merged into one entity. The in-house Transition Steering Committee estimated earlier this month that the district could save $13 million by outsourcing custodial services in what are now the city schools. But for now, the unified board has rejected a proposal to award the custodial contract to GCA, the current contractor for Shelby County Schools.
