Jesse Owens' name will return to Chicago school

School that had borne the name of the Olympic star was closed over the summer.

The Chicago school board has agreed to restore Jesse Owens' name to a South Side elementary school that was closed earlier this year. The Chicago Tribune reports that the name of the Olympic track and field star was removed when the district closed Jesse Owens Community Academy in the West Pullman neighborhood. The school's students were directed to attend nearby Gompers Fine Arts Options Elementary School. The former Owens building remained open as an annex of Gompers. The Gompers Local School Council voted several weeks ago to change the name of the consolidated school from Gompers to Owens.
