Homeland security chief Janet Napolitano picked to lead University of California system

Janet Napolitano, the U.S. secretary of Homeland Security, has been nominated to be the next president of the University of California system. The Los Angeles Times says the selection reflects officials' belief that a highly visible political personality may be able to raise more money and have more influence in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. If her appointment is approved, Napolitano, the former governor of Arizona, would be the first female president in UC's 145-year history. Current President Mark G. Yudof is leaving office after five years.
