All schools in Louisiana's Recovery District will be charters in 2014-15

State-run school system will be the nation's first all-charter district

The Recovery School District in Louisiana will become the nation's first all-charter system in September 2014, a year earlier than planned. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Superintendent Patrick Dobard plans to accelerate the phaseouts at Sarah T. Reed and George Washington Carver high schools in eastern New Orleans, which now have only juniors and seniors. The system had already decided to close its final two elementary schools -- A.P. Tureaud and Benjamin Banneker -- this June. Of the 89 public schools in New Orleans, only five will not be charters next fall, all under the local Orleans Parish School Board.
