University spending on research and development in all fields totaled $65.8 billion in fiscal year 2012, according to data from the National Science Foundation. The foundation's Higher Education Research and Development Survey found that, when adjusted for inflation, higher education R&D expenditures declined by 1.1 percent in 2012-13.
