States whose schools have the highest rates of discipline incidents

April 3, 2018
Federal statistics track discipline incidents in which a student is removed from class for at least a day.

Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2017, published in March by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, compiles data that looks at crime in U.S. public schools and postsecondary institutions and the steps that institutions have put in place to make school climates safer.

"Establishing reliable indicators of the current state of school crime and safety across the nation and regularly updating and monitoring these indicators are important in ensuring the safety of our nation’s students," the report's executive summary states.

The statistics collect show that in 2014-15, U.S. schools had nearly 1.3 million discipline incidents that resulted in the removal of a student from a regular education program for at least an entire school day.

Nationwide, there were 2,583 such incidents per 100,000 students.

The state with the highest rate of such incidents was Rhode Island, with 8,957 incidents per 100,000 students.

Here are the 10 states with the highest rates of imposing this discipline.
