The web site Wallet Hub has compiled a list that seeks to measure where young Americans are most at risk of adverse outcomes in adulthood.
Analysts looked at data from the 50 states and the District of Columbia and focused on 10 metrics to determine the states where young people are most at risk.
Among the metrics, which in most cases look at those aged 18 to 24: homelessness; those living in poverty; those who are not working and have no degree beyond a high school diploma; those without a high school diploma; those who are overweight or obese; those who have used drugs in the past year; those whose activities are limited because of physical, mental or emotional problems; the percentage of students who performed above 8th-grade level on math and reading assessments; and the labor force participation rate.
The rankings are based on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the highest level of youth risk.
The analysis concluded that youth in Mississippi are the most at risk, and youth in North Dakota were the least at risk.
