Nationwide, public elementary and secondary schools spent an average of $11,762 per student.

Public school districts in the United States spent $11,762 per pupil in 2015-16, according to newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

That represents a 3.2 percent increase in spending over the previous school year, the Census Bureau says.

All 50 states and Washington, D.C., saw an increase in revenue in 2015-16, which resulted in higher per-pupil expenditures.

Among the states, the highest average per-pupil expenditure was in New York, which spent $22,366 per pupil.
