States with the most school districts, 2013-14

Jan. 5, 2016
Some states have just a few countywide school systems, but others have metropolitan areas divided into dozens of separate districts.

Florida had more than 2.7 million students enrolled in public school districts in 2013-14. Only two states could claim having more, but when you rank states based on the number of school districts, the Sunshine State is nowhere to be found.

That's because Florida's students attend one of 76 countywide school systems, while a state such as Oklahoma, with many small-town systems, has its 681,000 students spread out in 598 districts.

Here is a list of the 10 states with the largest numbers of school districts in operation (i.e., districts with students enrolled).
