States with the most private schools, 2011-12

Federal statistics show that in 2011-12, there were nearly 35,000 private schools in the United States.

Eight states had more than 1,000 private elementary or secondary schools in 2011-12, according to "Characteristics of Private Schools in the United States: Results From the 2011–12 Private School Universe Survey," released by the National Center for Education Statistics.
