States with lowest ratio of students to teachers, 2017

Statistics from the National Education Association say the national average for public schools is one teacher per 15.96 students.

Vermont is the state with the lowest number of students per teacher, the National Education Association says.

The NEA, in its annual report, "Rankings of the States 2017 and Estimates of School Statistics 2018," says that in 2017, Vermont public schools had one teacher for every 9.49 students. At the other end of the spectrum, Nevada had the most students enrolled per teacher—25.86, according to the NEA.

Nationwide, there were 15.96 students enrolled for every public school teacher.
