Public school teachers in South Dakota had the lowest salaries of any state in 2015-16.

The average salary of $42,025 in South Dakota was more than $37,000 less than the average salary in New York state, according to data from the National Education Association.

Nationwide, the average public school teacher salary for 2015-16 was $58,353.
