From 2004-05 to 2014-15, teachers' salaries were the victim of the recession that plummeted the economy into crisis in 2008.
According to the National Education Association's Rankings & Estimates 2016, the average salary of a public school teacher increased by 20.8 percent (in current dollars), during that decade. Adjusted for inflation, that translates to a 10-year salary decline of 1.6 percent for teachers.
The states that saw the greatest increases in teachers' salaries range from some of the smallest (Wyoming, Washington, D.C.) to one of the largest (New York).
