States with the largest higher education enrollment, spring 2017

July 18, 2017
Statistics from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center show which states have the most college students.

In spring 2017, colleges and universities in the United States reported total enrollment of 18,071,004 students, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center says.

That's about 270,000 fewer enrollments than the 18,343,655 that higher education institutions reported in spring 2016, and about 520,000 fewer than the 18,592,605 reported in spring 2015.

Year-to-year spring higher education enrollment declined in 2017 in 39 states, the center found. Of the 10 states with the largest enrollments, only Texas had a one-year increase in student numbers in spring 2017.

Here are the 10 states whose postsecondary institutions had the most students enrolled in spring 2017.
