The gap among states from the lowest average salary to the highest is more than $37,000 a year.

The average public school teacher salary in the United States for 2015-16 was $58,353, according to data from the National Education Association. That represents a 1.3 percent increase over the 2014 average salary of $57,611.

The range of average teacher salaries among individual states ranged from $79,152 in New York to $42,025 in South Dakota.
