A teacher and a student have been shot and wounded at a middle school north of Indianapolis.

WTTV-TV reports that the shooting occurred in a seventh-grade science classroom at Noblesville West Middle School in Noblesville, Ind.

Police declined to disclose the identities of the victims or their conditions, but family members of the teacher say he was shot three times and had undergone surgery, The Indianapolis Star reports.

Investigators say a student was in custody.

Police say that a boy asked to be excused from a classroom Friday morning; when he returned, he was armed with two handguns and began shooting.

The suspect was taken into custody in the vicinity of the classroom.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the teacher injured in the shooting Friday morning has been identified by parents of Noblesville West as Jason Seaman.

The parents say Seaman intervened to help stop the shooter.

Jeremy Seaman, Jason's brother, says he isn't surprised that Jason, a former defensive end for Southern Illinois University, put his own safety at risk on behalf of his students.

“He’s not really ever been the person to run away," Jeremy Seaman says. "When the safety of the kids is at hand, it’s not surprising to me that he was going to do what he had to do.”

A Facebook post from Seaman's mother said he was out of surgery and "doing well."

Noblesville is about 25 miles north of Indianapolis.
