First responders found Jayvon Sherman wounded on a sidewalk a few blocks from his school.

A 16-year-old boy walking to school was shot to death Thursday morning in Macon, Ga.

The Macon Telegraph reports that Jayvon Sherman was found near the entrance to the former Winship Elementary School with a gunshot wound in the chest. No witnesses were around when deputies arrived.

Police say Jayvon was carrying a backpack and was believed to be heading to the nearby Central High School, where he was a student.

The student was rushed to a hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Counselors have been sent to the school to help students cope with their grief.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has been asked to provide extra security at Thursday night’s football game between Central and Rutland High School at Henderson Stadium.

“I just don’t know what to say,” Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said. “Any homicide is one too many, and I’ve said that before and I say it all the time in my interviews. But 16 years old? This young man is 16 years old.”
