SCHOOL & CAMPUS SECURITY WEBINAR SERIES: Part 4 of 4 (Oct. 31st)
Lessons Learned: A Security & Risk Roundtable on Campus Safety – Going Beyond the Active Shooter Mindset

Creating a school security and safety strategy is an ongoing framework that a school district must adopt that goes far beyond the ongoing mandates or technology purchases. Like any process in sustained education, school security is a process of continual improvement. Technology-based systems for access control, visitor management, video surveillance, shot detection, mass communications, or weapons detection do not keep schools safe. Facilities elements such as doors, locks, laminated or ballistic glass, and window security film do not keep schools safe. Correspondingly, a school’s security policies, processes, and procedures—including anti-bullying programs, anonymous/confidential reporting systems, emergency operation plans, active shooter response protocols, and behavioral threat assessment—do not keep schools safe. According to many school security administrators, most school security failures are human failures, not system or equipment failures. Success is predicated on the people implementing the plan. The people of a school community always keep their school safe more than its technology. That being said, best practices encompass the collaborative effect of both man and machine.
