Klein (Texas) district ready to open first new high school in 16 years

July 21, 2017
$175 million Klein Cain High campus will be the district's 5th high school.

The Klein (Texas) School District is scheduled next month to open its first new high school campus in 16 years—the $175 million Klein Cain High School.

The Houston Chronicle reports that the new school expects to welcome about 1,500 freshman and sophomore when classes begin on Aug. 21. Junior and senior classes will be added in subsequent years.

"I'm most excited about seeing the kids in this type of learning environment. It's very different from a lot of the traditional high schools," says Klein Cain High School Principal Nicole Patin. "It is very collaborative, open, and we literally remove a lot of barriers for the kids, both academically and structurally. We have walls that move, glass panels, so I am just excited to see what everyday life is going to look like at Klein Cain."

The 665,000 square-foot campus, which is the fifth high school in the Klein district, is named for Jim Cain, former district superintendent.

"The plans for Klein Cain have been on the table for a while and date back to funds associated with our 2008 and 2015 bond programs," says Klein Superintendent Bret Champion.

The last high school built in Klein was Klein Collins in 2001.

The Klein district has more than 51,000 students, and enrollment has been growing by close to 1,000 students a year. The district encompasses about 87.5 square miles in northwestern Harris County.
