Demolition clears the way for construction of new elementary in East Lansing

July 16, 2018
A new facility for Glencairn Elementary is scheduled to open in fall 2019.

The East Lansing (Mich.) district has torn down one of it elementary school buildings to make way for a modern learning facility that is scheduled to open next year.

The Lansing State Journal reports that construction of a new $16.2 million Glencairn Elementary is among a half-dozen projects funded by a $93.7 million bond proposal that East Lansing voters approved in 2017.

Demolition of the existing Glencairn building will be followed immediately by site work and construction on the new facility, East Lansing Superintendent Dori Leyko says. Many of the materials from the razed school are being recycled.

Students assigned to Glencairn are slated to attend the newly renovated Red Cedar Elementary during the coming academic year. Glencairn will reopen as a K-5 school in fall 2019, Leyko says.

The new school will have a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar readiness, separate bus drop-off and car drop-off areas and a two-story classroom wing. It also will have dedicated spaces for art, music, physical education and STEAM programming.
