Community college receives more than $7 million in foundation funding to pay for construction.

Delta College in University Center, Mich., has received $7.425 million from foundations to help pay for a facility in downtown Midland.

The community college says the Delta College Midland Center will house the Andrew N. Liveris Innovation Institute.

As part of the Institute, Delta College and the University of Michigan will collaborate to develop an interdisciplinary innovation and education hub that will help promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

The newly constructed building will include science and computer labs, classrooms, advanced educational and training technology, special use training rooms, multipurpose rooms and labs, student services and administrative space.

The college is evaluating potential sites this summer and plans to break ground by fall 2019.

The Midland Daily News reports that the building will be probably be about 30,000 square feet, comparable in size to a Delta facility being constructed in Saginaw, says Pam Clark, Delta's executive director of institutional advancement.
Construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months. Enrollment is expected to reach 700 students.

The funding is the combination of $4 million from The Dow Chemical Company Foundation, $2 million from The Dow Corning Foundation and $1.425 million from the Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow Foundation.
