Vote is underway on LEED for Schools standard

Green Building Council takes next step for school-specific rating system

Members of the U.S. Green Building Council are voting now on whether to adopt a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system specifically for school construction. The proposed standards are based on the LEED standards for new construction, but have been altered to recognize design elements unique to schools. The Council issued a draft of the proposed standard last year and has revised the proposal based on comments submitted from designers, manufacturers and others. The proposed LEED for Schools standards allow for a maximum of 77 points, compared with 69 under the existing new construction standards. The voting began March 6 and will continue through April; the primary contact for each member organization is eligible to vote. The council's policies require a two-thirds approval of those voting for a standard to be approved.
